Automating Medical Capture | Chris O’Brien Lifehouse
Chris O’Brien Lifehouse is a Sydney-based not-for-profit cancer hospital serving public and private patients from all over New South Wales, Australia and the world and currently serves in the region of 30,000 patients a year.
Their 19 story state-of-the-art building provides 96 inpatient beds, eight operating suites and procedure rooms as well as 19 intensive care and high dependency beds.
From the beginning Lifehouse has been dedicated to the proposition of treating the whole patient and not just their illness and has built a medical facility which not only provides a revolutionary approach to patient care, but also employs some of the most advanced technology in the world to support its endeavor.
One key area for any hospital is the processing of huge volumes of paper that are accrued on a daily basis such as pathology, radiology and other lab reports, internal nursing forms, patient data, medical records plus doctor & specialist referrals to name just a few. Capturing and processing information in an accurate and efficient manner is a critical component of the healthcare cycle.
Comptron Software Australia worked with Lifehouse to create several process that drastically reduced processing times and ultimately improving performance across the hospital by making patient records available more readily.
The document capture system automatically imports doctor referrals from via a monitored depository.
All other medical documents are scanned in with Kodak scanners using Kofax VirtualReScan (VRS) technology. This process was designed and implemented to create a vastly superior quality image compared to other scanning methods, This is essential for preserving accuracy when viewing documents at a later time via the organisations in-Vitro and Meditech systems.
The nursing forms, which are typically larger than A4 size, were managed through a Computron developed custom module, which splits the A3 forms providing the best possible readability, when accessed via the organisations medical image repository system.
Computron further integrated the Cerner database used by The Royal Prince Albert. This gave excellent free form recognition results for notoriously hard-to-process unstructured document types by using fuzzy data lookups.
INTEGRATING MOBILE CAPTURE TECHNOLOGY
The total solution is designed to meet the 99% availability requirement of Lifehouse, which utilises the Kofax Monitor system combined with a high availability VM infrastructure.
The solution also integrates the Kofax Capture system, Kofax Transformation Modules, Kofax Mobile Capture and the Kofax Front Office Server.
